Study abroad in Oaxaca

Take your Spanish course in Oaxaca, a city that combines colonial architecture with Native American traditions.

Be inspired by the indigenous traditions and visit the famous markets of the hill top city, which is popular with artists and artisans who like to soak up the creative atmosphere. Oaxaca is a colorful place, particularly coming to life during fiesta time, such as for the Day of the Dead and Noche de Rabanos. The historic city centre was made a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1998.

Although the Spanish founded the city in 1529, people have been living here since prehistoric time and only sixteen kilometers away was the capital of the Zapotec civilization from 500 B.C. to 8000 A.D. As a result, around the city you can find a number of interesting archaeological sites and small villages. This surrounded countryside is also a fantastic place for outdoor activities, with a range of hiking, biking and horseback riding trips available.

Oaxaca is also known for its food, with specialties including mole (a spicy sauce), chapulines (fried grasshoppers) and tlayudas (large tortillas). All washed down with delicious hot chocolate or mezcal.
