Study abroad in Antigua

In the middle of the Guatemalan highlands, surrounded by three volcanoes, Antigua is a quiet oasis in comparison with the chaos of other Central American cities. The main attraction here is Antigua itself. The picturesque cobble stone streets offer stunning scenes of well preserved Spanish colonial buildings, colorfully painted and well maintained. Antigua was formally the capital of the Spanish colony in Guatemala, and despite suffering from volcano eruptions and earthquakes, remains an important town, having been declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1979.

Within Antigua itself, historical sites and ruins are popular for visitors to explore, as is the central market, which boasts a plentiful array of tropical fruits including mangoes, papayas and pineapples. For those who want to explore further afield, visits to surrounding towns, coffee plantations and even to scale the famous Acatenango and Fuego volcanoes which surround Antigua are all easily accessible from Antigua itself. Given its rise as a popular tourist destination in recent years, Antigua is now home to many bars and restaurants to suit all budgets and food cravings.

It is understandable that Antigua has become one of the most popular destinations in Central America to take a Spanish language course. The landscapes, culture and history combined with low prices and friendly Guatemalans make it an ideal destination to learn Spanish.
