Study abroad in Cagliari (Sardinia)

Study Italian in Cagliari, located on the beautiful island of Sardinia, famous for crystal waters and mysterious ruins.

The Italian island of Sardinia is well known worldwide for its white sands, pristine coasts and hidden caves. The most exclusive beaches are on Costa Smeralda, located in the north of the island. These beaches are the preferred destination of models and artists as a backdrop for their photo shoots for international fashion and beauty magazines, featuring the stunning landscapes and views. Also well known is Monte Tiscali, where many hikers head to visit the mysterious ruins of the abandoned village that can be found reaching the mountain summit. If you wish to delve deeper in the exploration of the island’s past, a visit to the archaeological site of Su Nuraxi, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a must. It is one of the most visited archaeological sites on the island, being the largest and best-preserved ruins in Sardinia.

If you are interested in water sports, Cala Luna beach is the best destination to snorkel, kayak and do some fishing, as well as to explore and climb the imposing granite caves. Away from the hustle and bustle of the popular beaches is the hidden wonder of the wild Costa Verde, (Green Coast), named for its lush vegetation and uninterrupted, immaculate coastline. This part of Sardinia is ideal for taking long, peaceful hikes, with little development to be found here.

Cagliari, also known as "Casteddu" in Sard language is a special destination. The capital has one of the oldest and most important ports of the island and its cobbled narrow streets will lead you to historical sites where you will be astonished by the multicultural architecture, such as the Castello district, where you will find monumental traditional buildings with their diverse facades and styles. Another interesting site to visit is the archaeological site of the ancient city of Nora, which today holds the city’s well-conserved ruins, which remains well preserved despite the fact that half of the city is submerged in the Mediterranean Sea. As night falls, Cagliari’s bars and artistic scene flood the city with a bubbling atmosphere. The place to meet here is Plaza Yenne, where the young people of Cagliari head to enjoy the best their town has to offer. Here you can sample some of the delicious dishes and drinks for which the island is famous for. To get the best possible view of the city a trip up the Tower of the Elephant, an ancient city fort, will give you stunning views. You can also spend your time enjoying nearby natural landscapes, such as the Sella del Diavolo mountain, meaning Devil’s Saddle and named as such for an ancient local legend. From here you will have a spectacular view of the coast.

Even though the older generations encourage younger Sardinians to maintain the tradition of speaking Sard, Italian remains the most commonly spoken language around the island. As such, speaking and practicing your Italian skills with the friendly Sardinians you encounter on your language course abroad will be no trouble!
