Located in the south of France, this city is well known for its Mediterranean climate, making it a great destination all year round, thanks to its agreeable temperatures and weather. The cities narrow streets are full of boutiques, cafes and artisanal shops, which invite passersby to submerge themselves in the wonderful culturally and historically rich atmosphere.

The famous main avenue, Cours Mirabeau, is the most frequented and busiest part of the city. This is also the central part of the town, with some of the most important sights found here, including the Palace of Justice and the largest and most decorative fountain, La Rotonde, which is guarded by lion statues. Taking a walk down the main avenues of the town, you will discover book shops, boutiques and many cafes, evoking stories of the famous painters Cézanne and Picasso drinking their coffee in this picturesque setting. From here, you can easily access the city center, passing the wide calm avenues until you reach the Des Quatre Dauphins (the four dolphins) fountain. There are many beautiful heritage buildings which today house many of the cities fantastic museums, including the Musée du Vieil-Aix (the old Aix museum) which holds many objects related to the history of the city, the Pavillon de Vendôme, an old mansion from the 17th century which offers art expositions, and the well known L’atelier Cézanne, the former studio of the famous artist himself, Paul Cézanne. Here, Cézanne worked during the final years of his life, where he painted his famous depictions of the mountain of Sainte-Victoire. This mountain, which was a great inspiration to the painter, also makes for an enjoyable excursion out of the city. Other sites of interest which cannot be missed include the beautiful and imposing cathedrals of the middle ages, especially the Saint-Sauveur cathedral, which was built on the remains of an ancient Roman temple.

In recent years, the city has been named a “university city”, given an influx of students attending nearby universities and their associated institutes and research centers. The academic presence creates a positive study environment, as well as meaning that there is a lively student atmosphere, with cultural festivals, diverse markets, shops and a generally bohemian way of life which visitors will love.
