Study abroad in Sydney
Study English in Australia’s economic capital and largest city. Sydney offers a fantastic mix of perfect beaches and a urban lifestyle which is hard to be matched.
Sydney’s multicultural population, its waterside location and unique mix of traditional and modern architecture, alongside rich cultural offerings make it one of the most attractive cities in the world to study English. The British colonized Sydney in 1788, bringing prisoners to Australia. Since these beginnings, Sydney has grown into a major economic city, with a population of 4.5 million people. Although the colonized history of Australia is relatively short (approx. 200 years), it is believed that Aboriginal Australians had inhabited the country and Sydney surrounds up to 50,000 years ago.
With beaches just minutes from the city centre, it is easy to understand why Sydney attracts such a diverse range of foreigners to come visit and often, live in this large modern city. A trip on the ferry from Circular Quay to Manly will take you past the famous Opera House, Harbour Bridge and the beautiful harborside suburbs where large houses reflect the bright sun amongst a sea of green trees. Despite being the largest city in Australia, Sydney is well known for having many trees amongst the mixture of colonial and modern architecture. Parks such as Hyde Park and the Royal Botanic Gardens which overlook the Sydney Opera House provide a breath of fresh air amongst the busy city. Other inner city sites include the famous Taronga Park Zoo, the Rocks district below the Harbor Bridge and many museums and galleries.
Visitors will find it hard to choose between spending their time lazing on the beaches of Bondi or Bronte Beach and enjoying a delicious meal in one of the many trendy cafes and restaurants in the suburb of Surry Hills, where rows of terrace houses are mixed with new developments, bars and trendy night spots. Being rated as one of the most livable cities in the world does come with a price however, with Sydney well known for being one of the most expensive cities in which to live in the world. With such a varied population (there are an estimated over 250 languages spoken by the population of Sydney) it will not be hard for language students to find their place amongst the bustling city of Sydney.
