Amauta was founded in 1996 and is Cusco’s most well-known language school. In addition to providing high-quality Spanish classes, the school specializes in cultural programs. As a result, at Amauta you can choose to combine your Spanish lessons with classes studying Incan history and culture, Peruvian cooking, traditional music, Peruvian dancing or Quechua (one of the indigenous languages of the Andean people). In addition, there are options to trek to Machu Picchu as part of your course or to spread your Spanish lessons over more than one location with the 'Travelling Classroom' program. This special course enables you to combine studying Spanish in Cusco with a week in one of Amauta's smaller schools in the Peruvian rainforest or the Sacred Valley.
Housed in a colonial-style building, the school was recently completely renovated and many of the classrooms have the town’s typical blue balconies from where there is a great view of Cusco. Amauta is located just two blocks away from the central square, Plaza de Armas.
Courses at Amauta are taught in small groups by two different teachers and are focused on practical activities and exercises. These methods ensure that classes are varied and that all students receive individual attention and therefore make quick progress.
Amauta provides its students with an activity program that includes a number of free sessions such as dance lessons, cooking classes and film viewings. The school also has its own tour agency to help students to arrange extra activities and weekend excursions at an additional cost. These might include visiting ancient Incan villages, trekking and rafting.
